A California law, SB 168, helps protect identity theft victims by preventing new credit from being granted to a potential fraudster. SB 168 allows for California residents to place a freeze on their credit file.
If a freeze is present, the file cannot be returned to a subscriber unless the subscriber has an exempted use or the consumer has lifted the security freeze. This new law only effects consumers who are residents of California.
Exempted use status can be set on the subscriber’s access code by Trans Union. If the consumer wished you to have access to their credit information, Trans Union will issue an access code to the consumer who will provide it to you.
